Top 5 countries in Internet Users : Digital Potential of China and India

China has the highest number of Internet users worldwide with 513 million, more than double that of the US in second position (Internet World Stats), and close to 10 times more than British Internet users. Looking at the penetration rates of internet within the population, China scores at 38%, around half the penetration rate of the richest occidental countries, usually in the high 7Os, 80s, sometimes reaching the 90s. No wonder everybody talks about the potential of China. When the Chinese digital market will reach maturity, another half billion Internet users will be within reach of a computer or mobile connection from anywhere around the world. As China ranks 7th country in the rate of GDP growth at 9.2% (CIA World Factbook), the potential digital development of the largest population is clear. Now to set foot in the market is another story as one needs to be introduced and have a local contact.

Another giant to keep a watch on its digital development is India. Today, only 10% of its population is connected to the web. But that 10% in actual value represents 121 million users; amounting grossly to the whole population of Japan or a little less than the populations of France and the UK together. India also has a strong growth rate of 7.8%, ranking 15th in the world’s fastest growing GDP. Another advantage of targeting India is the fact that the most affluent Indians, the ones who are connected to the web, speak and write English. Just as anywhere else, localization and taking into account the culture and usages of Indians are important to be successful when developing one’s business. The day India will to reach the penetration rate of industrial countries of today, that would add another 830 million connected people; grossly the total populations of the US and Europe together.

Top 5 Countries in Number of Internet Users Worldwide

In the chart below of the top 5 countries in number of Internet users, you can clearly see the potential digital development of China and India. The USA is in second place, between the two aforementioned giants. Then comes Japan, followed by Germany, the only European country in the top 5.

Share of Internet Users within Top 5 Countries Compared to World Connected Users

One out of five Internet users is Chinese and one out of twenty is Indian. These stats will only grow bigger with the development of the offline and online economies in those countries. China is estimated to become the first e-commerce market by 2015, overpassing Europe, the biggest market since 2008.

10 Global Digital Trends of Today and Tomorrow

We are at a turning point in history today, moving into the digital era and information society. Many new digital jobs have been created in the past decade & many more will arise in the future. Business and marketing are becoming more complex with the web. I see 10 big trends shaping up the digital world: the web 2.0, video content, mobility, the Cloud, geolocation, big data, analytics, augmented reality, voice command of objects and the web 3.0: all of these create new business opportunities that we cannot imagine today. The changes are developing at a faster rate than ever before. Here are the 10 trends sorted in order of visible presence in today’s mass market landscape:

1. The web 2.0: otherwise called social web, connects individuals. It is the web of collaborative platforms, forums, blogs, wikis and social networks. A trend included within the web 2.0 is social commerce, in other words, e-commerce done with web 2.0 tools: user generated comments such as product ratings, forums, sharing shopping information (social shopping).

2. Video content: is a trend that has been around for a couple of years and continues to grow. In 2015, mobile video will generate 66% of mobile data worldwide . YouTube, the video database platform, is one of the most popular websites in the world, and at the top of the list for video viewers, with 142 million unique visitors . For corporations, the interesting part of videos concerns the branded content or in other words video content for the purpose of advertising. The best videos, whether branded content (=advertising video) or not, benefit from viral marketing and get millions of viewers in minimal time.

3. Mobility: this trend is quite present in our minds as an increasing number of people have a mobile phone connected to the web, otherwise called a Smartphone. Mobility gives access to infinite web information from anywhere around the world. Mobility is often linked to ATAWAD: Anytime, anywhere, any device.

4. The Cloud: having data stored on external servers for one’s business or personal purpose is becoming democratized. Diigo, Google documents, Dropbox, Picassa, all these services are in the Cloud and require minimal disk space on corporate servers or computers. Some big corporations such as Valeo decided to trust the Cloud rather than having to secure their data with their computer engineers from hackers and theft. Having Google or Amazon secure confidential data seems to be a choice more and more widespread as their expertise and business models rely on computer network security. Google already commercialized the Chromebook, a computer that stores all information and software in the Cloud. It has been named the computer for people who hate computers by the Telegraph as there is no need to call a computer expert from the IT department since all is automated. Today, Chromebook is ahead of its time as broadband connections are not universally available. When the connection is down, it’s coffee time or back to paper and pen until the connection goes back up.

5. Geolocation: is the detection of the physical location of a mobile device. The possibilities offered by geolocation are infinite: finding one’s way with Google maps in our hand, walking close to a store and seeing the promotions they have on Foursquare, paying our coffee at Starbucks with our mobile, receiving targeted information from an advertising billboard in the street.

6. Big data: with a consumer’s information coming in from multiple channels such as mobile phones, computers, stores, the data quantity increases greatly and arrives in real time. All that data needs to be analyzed in order to optimize the consumer experience. For example, a consumer looked at the specs of a camera on the web and then went into a store to have a feel for the product. There, she scans a QR code for more information and her mobile app tells her that at the competitor store it is 10€ cheaper. As you can imagine, understanding the consumer journey is much more complex than a decade ago. Today, a loyalty program needs to access information in real time from all the touchpoints to be up to date and communicate the right messages to its loyal customers.

7. Analytics: with big data comes analytics. More and more items will be analyzed to optimize processes. E-learning, video games, marketing & sales data, web site data and all other consumer touchpoint data are creating an unprecedented quantity of items to analyze, organize and then optimize.

8. Augmented reality: it is a type of virtual reality attempting to replicate a specific environment with a computer or mobile device. There exists wide varieties of implementations going from education to tourism to retail. In education, there are programs to virtually visualize the inside of a body and learn what different parts look like and how they interact with each other. In the tourism industry, when pointing towards a specific location with a mobile phone, there is a description of the site and its history will that appears. In the optical industry, people are able to visualize how they would look wearing different frame shapes and colours by virtually overlaying frames on a picture or a webcam image.

9. Voice command of objects: the most famous voice command of objects is Siri, the computerized voice in the latest iPhone 4S that answers to you when you ask what the weather will be like tomorrow. It may not work perfectly with different accents and local sayings but its quite a good start. We are not far away from the time when we will tell our laundry machine to do a cotton wash at 40°C and a fast one. Sooner than we think, computers keyboards might become superfluous.

10. The web 3.0 or M2M (for Machine to Machine) or the Web of Things are different names for the web of connected objects. Since the 60’s, there are movies and documentaries on the home automation. What most people do not realize is that automated fleet management of trucks and their loads is already a reality. On the home automation side, our refrigerator will soon tell us that there is no more butter and may even place an automatic order to our favorite online supermarket.

These innovations are changing our world and shaping it into a new dimension. It is up to us to seize the opportunities and make the most out of them.

Steve Jobs: a Visionary Genius we Will Miss

Steve Jobs, who brought Apple and its products to the top as THE marketing reference, passed away. A surprise for most who were expecting and hoping he would be around a couple more years. Apple’s charismatic leader will stay one of the few  exceptional visionary businessmen of our era. His worldwide influence and vision in regards to product design and international marketing are above par: the simplicity and beauty of the iPod, iPhone, iPad are envied and copied by many competitors. Also, he created the new music era by imposing a new business model to the music industry : songs on iTunes at 1$. Who else could have imposed such a decision to the worldwide music market? He has brought  so many innovations in numerous domains to the world that it would be impossible to list them all. All I can say is that as an international marketer, I will continue to be inspired by his style and vision for years to come.

We should keep in mind in that Mr. Jobs loved the products he was developing, the job he was doing and passed away at an early age, but at least doing what he loved as CEO and then Chairman of Apple’s Board till the end.

R.I.P. and may Steve Jobs’ memory continue to influence worldwide innovation.

E-commerce trade show Paris 2011 – Introduction

I just came back from 3 intense days at the e-commerce trade show in Paris, the biggest in Europe. Apparently, there were less people than the previous years: could it be the Greek debt kicking in, affecting the stock exchanges and corporate confidence, who tend to limit their spending by cutting on traveling? If it is not the only reason, it probably plays a role; it is also a demonstration of how the economic health of one country can affect many others; how international relations and economics can be complex, just as international business.

Throughout the conferences and interesting discussions I have had at the e-commerce show, an important learning is that developing internationally is more complicated than it may seem, even in Europe where the main economic objective is to facilitate sales within all EU countries and create a real common market.

I have met many international professionals since Tuesday and I was surprised that 100% of them agreed to be interviewed for my thesis. I would like to thank all these business men and women for being open minded and giving time to my thesis on “-Expanding abroad via Internet-”. I wish that in return, those same people may be able to learn from my freshly created blog and more specifically my professional thesis once it is finalized.

Please note that my thesis is meant to be written in such a way that anybody, without having specific internet knowledge, can understand.

If you would like to know more about my experience at the e-commerce trade show Paris 2011, please send in your questions and comments.

Limiting the Thesis Subject

As the subject “Expanding abroad via internet” is vast, we will limit our analysis geographically.

We will work with the markets where we have a past experience or sufficient data to back-up statements. The main focus will be on Western Europe, and more specifically France in comparison to the US.

Why a blog?

There are many reasons that push for a blog:
1) The most important one is to take advantage of the social web or web 2.0 to get feedback, comments, inspiration, and build a community of peers interested in the thesis subject.
2) As the MBA is in Marketing and Sales on Internet, a blog seems to be a minimum to prove that the classes do not stay theoretical but are actually put into practice.
